Your Trusted Partner in Oxygen Therapy

At hbotXzürich we are dedicated to providing the highest quality hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Our two hyperbaric oxygen chambers with air pressures of 1.5 and 2.0 bar allow you to receive treatment tailored to your medical condition and to share our facilities with a partner. Our experienced medical team is committed to providing personalised care and helping you achieve your optimal health goals.

If required, a medical assessment of your individual case and medical guidance throughout your treatment is available. We are also experts in metabolic and terrain-based cancer therapies, including special HBOT protocols for cancer patients.

What is HBOT?

HBOT is a safe, non-invasive treatment that involves breathing 70-100% medical grade oxygen in a pressurised chamber. The specific pressure applied, the amount of oxygen inhaled and the duration of the session are determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the individual’s condition and treatment goals. HBOT has a long history, with over 200 years of proven efficacy in the treatment of more than 150 health conditions. As oxygen is the most essential nutrient for every cell in the body, the significant increase in tissue oxygen levels experienced while in the HBOT chamber contributes to recovery and healing.

However, HBOT is not just about oxygen and pressure. Over time, it also acts as an epigenetic modulator of over 8,000 genes and as a stem cell booster. As a result, it continues to affect our cellular functions long after the therapy has ended.

How HBOT Works

Increased Tissue Oxygen Levels
Under normal pressure conditions, the haemoglobin in red blood cells is responsible for transporting oxygen to all types of tissue in the body. An increase in air pressure results in the dissolution of oxygen directly into the blood plasma, thereby raising tissue oxygen levels by up to 1,200%. This ensures that oxygen is delivered to organs that are in need of it, including areas affected by injuries, stroke, cancer or numerous other conditions.

Improved Blood Flow
Oxygen plays an important role in reducing swelling and inflammation, allowing for improved blood flow to damaged tissue or areas affected by hypoxia (when the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply).

Increased Energy Production
By enhancing mitochondrial efficiency, more ATP (the energy currency of the cells) is generated, leading to an elevated metabolic rate and improved tissue repair.

Anti-Inflammatory
Oxygen has an anti-inflammatory effect by reducing the release of inflammatory substances and by constricting leaky blood vessels.

Cellular Protection
Surplus oxygen acts as a hormetic stressor, prompting the internal production of antioxidants in the cells. This makes tissues more resistant to toxins and enhances healing processes. It is especially desirable in cases of surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

New Tissue Formation
HBOT prompts stem cell mobilisation, new vessel formation, new collagen synthesis, fibroblast activation and telomere lengthening, which collectively contribute to overall healing and longevity. Furthermore, surplus oxygen assists in the disposal of old and dysfunctional cells (apoptosis) and the clearance of waste material. These processes enable optimal tissue healing and new nerve cell and synapse formation after a traumatic brain injury or stroke, for example. They also improve outcomes in the treatment of dementia, Parkinson’s and other chronic conditions.

Pain Relief
The opioid-like effect of oxygen and a reduction in inflammatory cytokines with a subsequent decline in swelling results in reduced pain levels.

Antibacterial Effect
Oxygen directly destroys harmful microorganisms, making it an effective natural antibiotic therapy.

Treatable Conditions

The list of conditions that can be treated with HBOT is extensive. These include pre- or post-surgery, crush injuries, radiation tissue damage, chronic non-healing wounds, diabetes, chronic infections, compartment syndrome, severe anaemia, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, thermal burns, osteomyelitis, traumatic brain injuries, stroke, neuropathy, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, post-Covid/vaccine syndrome, mental illness, diverse autoimmune diseases, low back pain, intervertebral disc hernia, cancer (see also below), Crohn’s, colitis ulcerosa, lymphedema, migraine/headaches, osteoporosis, musculosceletal injuries and spinal cord injury. HBOT can also be used proactively to improve athletic performance, longevity and well-being. The list of conditions above is not exhaustive.

HBOT has been shown to be particularly effective in the treatment of cancer, e.g. during and after radiotherapy to avoid long term side effects.

FAQ

Is HBOT safe?
